The Orange Street Fair was founded in 1973 and incorporated in 1985. It was to look for ways to celebrate its 100th year. They choose to do a street fair, as they were inspired from the first street fair the town held in 1910. Since the fair was so successful, it became an annual tradition during labor day weekend. The street fair took place from September 1st to the 3rd. Each Year the Street Fair has a theme that drives the designs of the brands. This year’s theme for the street fair was ¨A Taste of Tradition¨ or ¨45 Years of Flavor and Fun”. It is the 45th year of the annual Orange International Street Fair.

Friends, families and neighbors get together to experience different foods, music, and dance from all around Orange with cultures from all around the world.

Food and alcohol booths are run by local non-profit businesses, in which the money made goes to helping those in need in Orange. Handmade arts and crafts such as bracelets and hats are in a section featuring their artistic creations. It hints to traditions from countries and cultures all around the world. There is a commercial section that features local companies that are promoting their businesses. The Orange Street Fair also contains eight stages for entertainment where local bands, including McPherson’s own Avenidos brothers, play music and perform in front of a lot of different and interesting people.

McPherson leadership students worked the Switzerland Booth, where they helped sell spicy chicken, Polish, and bratwurst sausages. When the leadership students gained tips, they would holler ¨Tip Tip Hooray!¨ The tips they received help pay for all the fun school activities like Fun Friday and middle school dances that we have throughout the year.  The swiss booth was quite popular.

Although the booth was very popular, tips were down compared to previous years. One possible reason might be that this year’s turnout was down due to extreme heat on the Labor Day weekend where temperatures reached 98 degrees on Saturday.

Approximately half of a million people go to the fair every single year. That is a remarkably large amount of people. Parking was difficult to find and people had to park in multiple different parking lots around the area. Citizens charged up to $10 for parking. As you can see, the Orange Street Fair is an extremely fun activity that a lot of people go to with friends and family.
