What an opening game on Monday, November 26, when McPherson’s flag football team hosted Santiago Middle School! It could’ve gone either way the whole game. Santiago got the ball first and was able to score but they missed the extra point. When McPherson got the ball, they were also able to score a touchdown and they converted on the extra point attempt. It was pretty much just back and forth with stops coming for both sides. Near the end of the first half, McPherson had the ball. Quarterback Owen Smith threw a touchdown to wide receiver Sam Astor. Mcpherson was able to stay on top for the rest of the half and keep Santiago scoreless.

In the second half, the game went back and forth with both sides were hoping for a defensive stop. That is where Mcpherson was able to take the lead and keep it. They were able to march down the field and score on a run by Owen Smith. That put McPherson up by two touchdowns.

The rest of the game was scoreless and Mcpherson was able to get the win, 27-12. After the game, we were able to get an interview with Sam Astor, McPherson’s slot receiver and cornerback. He scored one touchdown and was lights out on defense. We asked Sam, what his favorite part about the game was. He said, “My favorite part about the game was scoring a touchdown to put us up by one.” He also said that he is looking forward to seeing his team improve and get better throughout the season.

This was a big game for McPherson, who starts the season 1-0 They were able to defeat Santiago and get some momentum for the season. McPherson plays Cerro Villa on Monday, December 3.
