The McPherson Middle School Chess challenge was played from Tuesday, October 30 through Friday, November 9 with 32 7th and 8th graders competing for the grand prize of being named the McPherson Chess Champion and a new chessboard. The single-elimination chess tournament crowned 7th grader Garrett Kerr chess champion. Kerr outlasted fellow 7th-grade student Matthew Pasqualino to earn the title. The battle was between friends, but both wanted the grand prize. The pressure really started to set on Matthew as Garrett started taking more and more of Matthew’s chessman. Eventually, it came down to Matthew with his King, and Garrett with his king and pawn, in a thrilling match with over thirty spectators.

“It was a really great tournament,” said Mr. Turner, who organizes the annual tournament. “Chess is such a great sport and it challenges kids on so many levels. It’s fun to see so many kids involved and see the general excitement in the middle school.”

In addition to the overall winner chess set, every participant received a chess piece keychain.
