On January 29, the 8th graders went to the Meet the Masters program and learned about American artist and illustrator Norman Rockwell. Rockwell overcame adversity as a young boy who was constantly bullied to become a great artist who became famous for his work for the Saturday Evening Post magazine.  8th graders learned about Norman Rockwell and some of the art pieces that he created, including the “Four Freedoms”(1943), “Saying Grace”(1951), “The Problem We All Live With”(1964), and his famous self portrait, titled, “Triple Self Portrait”(1960).  All of these paintings tell a story and Norman Rockwell tried to help people imagine the stories of each painting.

Meet the Masters is divided into two parts: lecture and producing art. For the second half of the program, the students created a drawing of something seasonal that represented them. They drew things like trees, pumpkins, and flowers and then recreated a Saturday Evening Post magazine cover with their art. Riley and I interviewed

8th grader Jackson Bates said, “ I had a lot of fun and thought it was really cool what we learned about Norman Rockwell”.

The Meet the Masters is a program all grade levels participate in at McPherson and is made possible by our PTSA.
